DFMK Pro Bono Work
Over the last two years, Feuerstein Kulick’s pro bono department has worked to rectify the racial disparities in the prosecution of marijuana cases and to alleviate the draconian sentences marijuana offenders have suffered since the War on Drugs began. Feuerstein Kulick has partnered with Glasshouse, a CA state operator, and the Weldon Project, a not-for-profit organization that aids prisoners incarcerated for cannabis related offenses. Currently, the firm is representing Parker Coleman. In 2012, a federal court in North Carolina sentenced Parker to 60 years in prison for a non-violent marijuana trafficking offense. Because of the sentence’s obscene length, the firm is pursuing commutation and/or clemency on his behalf. Regrettably, Parker is only one of thousands of federal defendants across the country serving draconian sentences for cannabis related offenses. As a consequence, the firm, in collaboration with The Weldon Project, has drafted clemency guidelines for the DOJ that are designed to expedite their release. In subsequent months, Feuerstein Kulick’s pro bono team intends to identify more prisoners like Parker and to draft clemency and/or compassionate release petitions on their behalf.
